STORMS

October 2011

It’s Saturday morning and as I drink a cup of coffee I’m looking around and wondering what I should tackle first.  We were out of town last weekend so it’s been a couple weeks since anything of significance was accomplished in our home.
We seem to be on a roll where everything is breaking down or not working as it should.  About a month ago we discovered water had been leaking into our downstairs bedroom.  That particular area was covered by a bed so the wetness wasn’t noticeable until is spread well beyond its protective cover.  Dave called “The Basement Detectives” to come in and solve the mystery. After installation of a sump pump, sealing our foundation, replacing drywall and of course dishing out a few thousand dollars we were finally ready to order new carpet and paint.  Not so fast!  We awoke one morning to find, you guessed it, water had again leaked into the bedroom.  REALLY GOD????
Back came the detectives! Hmmm…..seems the water is coming from the townhouse beside us and the sump pump, foundation sealing, new drywall and of course the few thousand dollars were not even necessary!  REALLY GOD???  I’m afraid this saga will drag on for some period of time and we won’t be ordering carpet or painting anytime soon.
In addition to that the toilet in one of our bathrooms isn’t working right, even after Dave has spent numerous hours trying to fix it.  I’m thinking…..”The Bathroom Detectives” should be called!!  And if that isn’t enough, Ashley and I were driving home from work in one of those heavy rain storms that, of course, hit right at the afternoon rush.  In fact, we pulled over and waited for the rain to slow down so we could see to drive the rest of the way home.  It was one of those rains that came down so fast and water on the road was so deep it looked like a geyser when you drove through it. I reached down to pick my purse up off the floor of our car and it was wet.  So I felt the mat and realized it was sopping with water.  UGH!!  Apparently, we have a hole in the floorboard??  REALLY GOD???  So you know what I’m thinking…….it’s time to call “The Floorboard Detectives”!  OK, so again, it’s Saturday morning and I’m trying to decide what I should tackle first.  Then I remember the Casting Crowns song that says, “I will praise You in this storm”.  Finally, I understand what I must do first and that is to give thanks to God that our basement wasn’t completely flooded, that we have more than one bathroom to use and that we have a car that gets us where we need to go. Every once in while I need to step back and realize what is truly important in my life and sometimes God has to find a way (or ways) to get my attention.  I get so focused in my job and reacting to “life” that I forget what my first priority should be.
In the end, does all the noise really matter?  I don’t think so.  Only that joyful noise we make to the Lord, even when it’s storming.
